Outdoor seating from 2×4s
Design and build outdoor benches, seats and small structures from construction lumber for an outdoor learning space. Ergonomics, exterior fasteners and finishes, and a build that survives a Canadian winter.

Overview
The school wants an outdoor space where a class can sit and work. You are building it. In groups of three or four, each group designs and builds one piece: a bench, a two-person seat, a low table, a lectern, a planter with a seat built in, a small platform. Together the pieces make a space.
Everything is 2×4 construction lumber, which is cheap, strong and forgiving, and which also warps, splits, and rots if you let it. A good design uses the stock as it comes, in lengths that come out of 8’ boards with little waste, and keeps water from sitting anywhere.
Before you cut, you measure real people. A bench seat around 17" to 18" high and 16" to 18" deep suits most adults; a back leaning about 10° to 15° from vertical is comfortable; a seat wider than 6’ needs a leg in the middle. Test these on a mock-up made from scrap before you commit.

Assessment
Process. The site plan and model are done before cutting and match what was built. Cut list nests parts to use full boards. The build record is honest about problems and changes.
Product. Square, solid, no wobble, right fastener in the right place, edges eased, finish even, end grain sealed. Ergonomics tested on people, not guessed.
Impact. Safe throughout. Offcuts used or returned. The piece works with the others in the space, and it will still be standing in five years.
Deliverables
- A site plan showing where each piece goes and how people move through the space
- A Fusion model of your piece at real size with a cut list and a fastener list
- The finished piece, load-tested, finished, and installed outdoors
- A build record with photos at each stage, the changes you made, and the final cost
Materials
- 2×4 SPF, 8' and 10' lengths, plus a few 2×6 for seat tops if wanted
- Exterior structural screws, 2½" and 3"
- Construction adhesive rated for exterior use
- 80 and 120 grit sandpaper
- Exterior stain or paint, brushes, drop sheets
- Optional, 4×4 posts and post bases for anything anchored to the ground
Steps
Week 1: The space and the people
- Walk the site as a class. Where is the sun, the wind, the path, the door people come out of? Where does water go when it rains?
- Each group picks a piece and its spot. Draw the site plan together so the pieces make a space rather than a row.
- Measure people. Sit on things. Build a rough scrap mock-up of your seat height and depth and get five people to try it.
Week 2: Design
- Model your piece in Fusion with real stock dimensions (1½" × 3½"). Set the stock as a parameter so you can switch to 2×6 if you need to.
- Design joints for the tools you have. Legs and rails with cleats and screws are fine. Half-laps where two members cross are stronger and look better.
- Pull the cut list. Lay parts out on 8’ boards on paper. Adjust lengths so the boards come out even.
- Write the fastener list: type, length, quantity, and where each goes. Screw length is about 2½ times the thickness of the piece being fastened, and never through into air.
Weeks 3 and 4: Build
- Cut everything on the list before assembling anything. Label each part with pencil on an end.
- Assemble on a flat floor. Check square with a diagonal measurement after every sub-assembly. Clamp, pilot, screw.
- Dry-fit the whole piece before the adhesive comes out.
- Sand every edge and surface anyone will touch. Ease all corners.
- Load test: three people, standing, on the shop floor, with the teacher watching. Fix anything that moves.
Week 5: Finish and install
- Stain or paint, including the underside and all end grain. Two coats.
- Install on site. Level it; shim or trim legs so it does not rock.
- Photograph the whole space with people using it. Finish the build record with the final cost.
Stretch options
- A piece that folds or knocks down for winter storage.
- Integrated planter, storage, or a slot for a whiteboard.
- A shade structure over the whole space, with a proper post footing.
