Build a skateboard deck
Press a seven-ply maple deck with a Roarockit kit and a Thin Air Press vacuum bag, then shape it, drill it, finish it and ride it. Your outline, your concave, your graphic. A real product with real loads on it.

Overview
A skateboard deck is one of the purest products there is. Seven thin sheets of maple, glued and pressed into a curve, cut to an outline, drilled in eight places. Every part of it is a decision that changes how it rides: the width for your feet, the wheelbase for how it turns, the concave for how it locks your shoes in, the kicks for how it pops. Riders can feel a quarter inch.
The Roarockit kit makes the pressing possible without a hydraulic press. A foam mould gives the deck its 3D shape, and a vacuum bag squeezes the glued veneers onto it with about 15 psi of even pressure from a hand pump. That part is mostly patience. The design is in what you do before and after: the layup you choose, the outline you draw, how clean your cut is, how square your holes are, and what the bottom looks like when the board flips over.
Build it to ride. If you do not skate, build it for someone who does, and get them to test it.

Trucks that sit crooked are the one fault that ruins an otherwise good deck. Drilling gets the most weight after pressing.

Steps
Week 1: Spec and outline
- Measure decks. Borrow three from people who skate. Record length, width, wheelbase, nose and tail length, and how each one rides. Stand on them.
- Write your spec for one rider and one use: street, cruising, or a longboard. Pick numbers for every dimension and say why.
- In Fusion, sketch half the outline on a centreline with the dimensions as parameters, then mirror it. Fair the curve with as few spline points as you can. Mark the truck hole centres on the wheelbase.
- Print the outline 1:1 across tiled pages, or cut it from 1/8" plywood on the laser. Lay it on a real deck of similar size and check it looks right at full scale. Screens lie about size.
- Draw the layup: seven plies, top to bottom, with an arrow for grain on each. Decide where the two cross plies go and write one sentence about why.
Week 2: Press
- Dry-run the whole process with no glue: stack the plies on the mould, slide it into the bag, seal it, pump. Find out where the bag catches and how long the pump takes. Then take it apart.
- Set up: mould on the bench, plies in order, glue and roller ready, netting cut, bag open. Once the glue is out you have about ten minutes of open time.
- Roll a thin, complete coat of glue on the mating face of each ply. Thin means the surface looks wet everywhere and nothing drips. Stack them on the mould in your layup order, aligned at the centre.
- Into the bag, netting over the top under the valve, seal the end, pump until the bag is hard against the stack and the concave shows through. Check the seal for the first ten minutes and pump again if it softens.
- Leave it a minimum of 8 hours, better overnight. Open the bag, take the blank off the mould, scrape the squeezed-out glue, and let it cure another day flat before cutting.
Week 3: Cut, fair, drill
- Find the centreline of the blank from the mould marks and draw it end to end. Line up the template’s centreline on it, tape it down, and trace.
- Cut 2 to 3 mm outside the line with a jigsaw or band saw, blank supported so it does not vibrate. Let the tool do the cutting.
- Fair to the line. Rasp for the bulk, spokeshave or block plane along the grain, then a sander. Run your fingers along the edge with your eyes closed and fix every bump.
- Round over the edge, 1/4" top and bottom with a trim router, or by hand with a block. Sand the faces and edge, 100, 150, 220.
- Mark the truck holes from the centreline on the wheelbase, square, using a jig or the RockitRuler. Drill 3/16" from the top with a backer board under the deck so the exit is clean. Countersink the top so the bolt heads sit flush. Drop the truck bolts through and check every one falls freely.
Week 4: Graphic, finish, ride
- Design the bottom graphic for the outline you cut. Cut a vinyl stencil or a transfer, apply it, paint or leave the wood through it, and peel.
- Seal the bottom and edges with at least two coats of outdoor clear. Sand with 320 between coats. Seal the same day you finish sanding, so the wood does not pick up dust and moisture.
- Lay grip tape on the top, from the centre outward, and trim around the edge with a file and a blade.
- Mount trucks and wheels. Stand on it. Ride it, or get your rider to, on flat ground first. Note flex, turn, pop and anything that feels off.
- Write the record and one change you would make to the next deck. If the trucks sit true and the edge is clean, you have made a product.
Stretch options
- Design and shape your own foam mould for a different concave or a steeper kick, and press a second deck on it.
- Press a longboard from nine plies and compare its flex to the seven-ply deck under the same rider.
- Cut the outline on the CNC from your Fusion sketch instead of by hand, and compare the edge.
- Build a matching fingerboard from the kit’s offcuts, same outline scaled down.
